About This Tour
This full-day experience offers a genuine sense of life in Canterbury-- a region shaped by its land, produce, and people. It begins with a brief introduction to Christchurch--the Garden City-- whose character has been defined by renewal and a close relationship with the surrounding countryside. From there, the day unfolds beyond the city limits, following the everyday routes that connect urban life with farms, vineyards, and coastal landscapes.
At Glenafric Farm, you are welcomed onto a family-run sheep farm for an authentic hands-on introduction to rural New Zealand. Learn about wool production and land stewardship, handle raw fleece, and encounter different livestock rare-breeds while taking in panoramic views over coastal farmland and the South Pacific. A relaxed picnic lunch showcasing locally sourced produce is enjoyed on the farm before the journey continues to the Waipara Valley. At Georges Road Wines, meet the people behind the vineyard and enjoy a hosted tasting of cool-climate wines that reflect both the land and the small-scale approach of the region. Experience North Canterbury through the rhythms of its landscapes, food, and communities
What to Expect
Pick up from your accommodation starting at 8:45am.
Begin the day with a guided exploration of Christchurch, New Zealand’s Garden City. Learn how the city has transformed following the 2011 earthquake as historic landmarks, contemporary architecture, river corridors, and green spaces reveal a story of renewal, creativity, and resilience.
Depart the city and travel through rolling farmland and coastal landscapes, with engaging commentary from your guide bringing local history, geology, and rural life into context.
Arrive at Glenafric Farm for exclusive, behind-the-scenes access hosted by the Hoban family, offering a rare and personal insight into authentic New Zealand farm life. Set against sweeping coastal views over the South Pacific, this immersive visit invites you to take part in day-to-day farm activities, handle raw heritage wool, and learn about its significance to New Zealand’s agricultural history.
Meet a fascinating mix of livestock, including friendly Donny the miniature horse, and encounter one of the world’s rarest Merino sheep breeds, originally from the Sub-Antarctic Campbell Islands. Discover the region’s remarkable geology with the opportunity to see and touch a fossil dating back 10–12 million years, unearthed on the farm’s own beach. Enjoy time for photos across rolling pasture, rugged coastline, and dramatic ocean vistas, before relaxing with a thoughtfully prepared picnic lunch in a warm, rural setting.
Continue into the celebrated Waipara Valley, a boutique wine region renowned for elegant cool-climate wines. At George's Road Winery, enjoy a hosted tasting with the cellar door team, sampling refined regional styles such as Pinot Noir and Riesling.
In the late afternoon, return to Christchurch, enriched by a day of insight, flavour, and authentic encounters across city and countryside. This tour concludes with drop off to your accommodation.
