This 3-day, 2-night independent journey travels north from Auckland to Paihia, exploring the stunning Bay of Islands before returning to Auckland. Enjoy a Mini Russell Tour, discovering the historic seaside town of Russell, cruise through the beautiful Bay of Islands to the iconic Hole in the Rock, and visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to learn more about New Zealand’s history and Māori heritage. With a mix of scenic cruises, cultural experiences, and time to explore at your own pace, this short journey offers a great introduction to the Northland region.

Itinerary

3 days · Auckland to Paihia

  1. Day 1

    Auckland – Paihia

    Depart SkyCity Bus Terminal, 102 Hobson Street at 7.30am aboard your InterCity coach to Paihia.

    Travel north through the scenic landscapes of Northland to Paihia, the gateway to the Bay of Islands passing through Kaiwaka, known as the "Little Town of Lights", before continuing north.

    Upon arrival in Paihia, make your way on foot to your accommodation and leave your luggage with reception if your room is not yet available. Retrace your steps to Paihia Wharf and take the ferry to Russell, New Zealand’s first European settlement, where you’ll join a one-hour guided mini tour of this historic seaside village.

    In the early afternoon, depart Russell Wharf and cruise through the beautiful Bay of Islands, passing pristine islands and the spectacular Cape Brett Peninsula. View the historic Cape Brett Lighthouse and the famous Motukōkako (Hole in the Rock).

    Keep watch for dolphins and other marine wildlife as you cruise through the bay. Enjoy approximately 1.5 hours at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island, where you can relax on the beach, enjoy a walk or swim, or purchase refreshments from the licensed café.

    Return to Paihia at approximately 6:30pm.

  2. Day 2

    Day in Paihia

    • Overnight Paihia

    Travel north on a full-day excursion to Cape Reinga, one of New Zealand’s most significant cultural and natural landmarks.

    Journey along the famous Ninety Mile Beach aboard a custom-built coach before travelling along Te Paki Stream to the giant sand dunes. Here, you will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of sand surfing.

    At Cape Reinga, enjoy spectacular panoramic views from the lighthouse and witness the meeting point of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. Learn about the area's importance in Māori culture, where, according to tradition, spirits begin their journey to Hawaiki.

    Please note that the order of sightseeing may vary depending on tidal conditions.

    Lunch is included today.

    Return to Paihia in the early evening.

  3. Day 3

    Paihia – Auckland

    Checkout of your accommodation and store your luggage at reception

    This morning, visit Waitangi Treaty Grounds, one of New Zealand’s most important historic sites and the birthplace of the nation.

    Enjoy a guided tour of the grounds, including the magnificent Māori Meeting House and the impressive ceremonial waka (war canoe). Learn about the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and its significance in New Zealand’s history. Your visit also includes a traditional cultural performance featuring waiata, haka, and storytelling.

    Following your visit, return to Paihia township. There is time for lunch (own expense) and to collect your luggage from your accommodation before departing for Auckland by InterCity coach.

    Arrive at SkyCity Bus Terminal, Auckland at approximately 5:50pm, where your Bay of Islands journey concludes.

This is an INDEPENDENT travel package that combines scheduled coach travel with guided sightseeing experiences operated by multiple providers.
For your comfort, enjoyment, and safety, a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required. Guests should be comfortable carrying their own luggage when necessary, boarding and disembarking coaches, walking moderate distances, climbing and descending stairs, and walking over uneven surfaces at some attractions.

Cancel between 10 and 7 prior to tour departure date - 50% Refund
Cancel less than 7 days prior to tour departure date - no refund

• If Leisure Tours cancels a tour or is unable to provide a tour, (excluding acts of nature, terrorism or war) a full refund will be provided
• Leisure Tours reserves the right to charge an administration fee if the tour cancellation has become problematic.
• Once the tour has commenced, no refunds will be given for any unused portion of the tour.
