Experience an unforgettable wildlife adventure to Kaikōura, one of the world's most important seabird habitats. Renowned for its rich marine environment, Kaikōura offers exceptional opportunities to observe albatross and a remarkable variety of ocean-going birds in their natural habitat. Combined with spectacular coastal scenery, abundant wildlife, and expert commentary, this day tour is a must for nature lovers and birdwatching enthusiasts.
Your day begins with pick-up from your central Christchurch accommodation between 7:00am and 7:45am. Travel north through the rural landscapes of North Canterbury before joining the spectacular coastal highway where the Pacific Ocean meets the foothills of the Southern Alps.
Upon arrival in Kaikōura, enjoy free time to purchase lunch, explore the township, browse local shops, or simply relax and enjoy the coastal atmosphere before your wildlife adventure.
In the afternoon, board your dedicated Albatross Encounter vessel and cruise into the nutrient-rich waters just offshore. Kaikōura’s unique underwater canyon system supports an extraordinary abundance of marine life and attracts one of the greatest concentrations of seabirds found anywhere in New Zealand.
With expert nature guides on board, search for several species of albatross, including some of the world’s largest flying birds. You’ll also have the opportunity to observe petrels, shearwaters, terns, shags, gulls, and other pelagic seabirds that frequent these productive waters.
Following your cruise, visit a local fur seal colony where these charismatic animals can often be observed basking on the rocky shoreline against a backdrop of dramatic mountain and ocean scenery.
Relax on the return journey to Christchurch, arriving at approximately 6:30pm with drop-off at a central city location.

Friendly & informative. We got to see plenty of Albatrosses and other Pelagic birds and learned about them too. Just want to mention, it was a pretty small boat which was fine for us, but if you are nervous out at sea, you might want to reconsider this particular trip, but the company does have other trips on offer. Kaikoura is a lovely town and worth a visit.
