Tour Overview

This 4-day, 3-night independent journey travels north from Wellington to Auckland visiting's some of New Zealand's highlights along the way. Enjoy a visit to Rotorua's Whakarewarewa Living Māori Village, experience the Waitomo Glowworm Caves and Hobbiton Movie Set and explore Auckland's main City Sights. The package includes two nights’ accommodation in Rotorua and one night in Auckland.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Wellington – Rotorua

    • Depart Wellington
    • Arrive Rotorua
    • Overnight Rotorua

    Travel north by InterCity coach to Rotorua, New Zealand’s renowned geothermal destination.

    Depart Wellington at 7.45am and journey through the lower North Island, via Palmerston North and the picturesque Rangitīkei region, known for its rugged bush-clad hills, productive farmland, and dramatic river gorges carved by the Rangitīkei River.

    Continuing through the Central Volcanic Plateau, a vast high-country landscape shaped by geothermal activity and framed by several active volcanoes.

    Arrive in Taupō, situated on the shores of New Zealand’s largest lake. Formed within a massive volcanic caldera, Lake Taupō is one of the country's most impressive natural landmarks. Following a short break, continue through forested landscapes and rolling countryside to Rotorua.

    Arrive in Rotorua at approximately 4:40pm.

  2. Day 2

    Day in Rotorua

    • Overnight Rotorua

    This morning, discover the rich cultural heritage and geothermal wonders of Rotorua with a visit to Whakarewarewa – The Living Māori Village, home to the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people.

    Join a guided tour through New Zealand’s only living Māori village, where residents continue to utilise natural geothermal energy for cooking, bathing, and heating their homes. Explore the remarkable Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, featuring bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and the famous Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere.

    Learn about traditional Māori customs, daily life on the geothermal plateau, and the unique relationship between the local people and this extraordinary landscape. Visit important cultural and historical sites, including an active marae, the WWII Memorial Archway, historic churches, and sacred burial grounds.

    Conclude the experience with a cultural performance featuring waiata (songs), haka, stick games, and traditional storytelling that bring to life the legends, history, and heritage of the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people.

    From approximately 1:30 pm, transferred back to your accommodation where you can enjoy free time exploring Rotorua at your own pace.

  3. Day 3

    Rotorua – Auckland

    • Depart Rotorua
    • Arrive Auckland
    • Overnight Auckland

    This morning, travel north towards Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city.

    Depart Rotorua and travel through the scenic countryside of the central North Island. Along the way, pass through Fitzgerald Glade, where towering trees arch overhead to create a natural tunnel of greenery.

    Visit the world-famous Hobbiton Movie Set for a guided tour of the iconic filming location featured in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Explore Hobbit Holes, the Green Dragon Inn, the Party Tree, The Mill, and other memorable locations while learning how the movie set was created and maintained.

    Continue to the spectacular Waitomo Glowworm Caves, where millions of years of natural processes have created a fascinating underground world of limestone formations. Enjoy a guided walk through the caves before enjoying a silent boat ride gliding through the Glowworm Grotto, illuminated by thousands of tiny glowworms.

    Please note: This experience involves walking and includes approximately 75 steps.

    Lunch is included today.

    Arrive in Auckland at approximately 7:30pm.

  4. Day 4

    Day in Auckland

    Today is dedicated to exploring Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city and the renowned “City of Sails.”

    This morning, join a 3.5-hour sightseeing tour showcasing the city's history, Māori heritage, and most iconic landmarks. Built around the beautiful Waitematā Harbour, Auckland is known for its stunning waterfront setting and maritime culture.

    Highlights include visits to Auckland Domain, Mount Victoria in Devonport, and Westhaven Marina, along with numerous opportunities to enjoy panoramic city views and memorable photo stops.

    Your Wellington to Auckland journey concludes at approximately 12.30pm.

This is an INDEPENDENT travel package that combines scheduled coach travel with guided sightseeing experiences operated by multiple providers.
For your comfort, enjoyment, and safety, a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required. Guests should be comfortable carrying their own luggage when necessary, boarding and disembarking coaches, walking moderate distances, climbing and descending stairs, and walking over uneven surfaces at some attractions.

Cancel more than 10 days prior to tour departure date – full refund
Cancel between 10 and 7 prior to tour departure date - 50% Refund
Cancel less than 7 days prior to tour departure date - no refund

• If Leisure Tours cancels a tour or is unable to provide a tour, (excluding acts of nature, terrorism or war) a full refund will be provided
• Leisure Tours reserves the right to charge an administration fee if the tour cancellation has become problematic.
• Once the tour has commenced, no refunds will be given for any unused portion of the tour.
• Refunds do not include the third-party credit card surcharge fee.
